About the Item
This rare and exquisite 18th-century silver belt buckle from the Netherlands was worn on Yom Kippur, secured with a cloth sash around the traditional kittel. It is a masterful example of Dutch Jewish silversmithing, with elaborate openwork and deeply symbolic iconography.
The buckle features alternating raised vignettes of Moses and Aaron, framed by elaborate scrolling foliage and decorative flourishes. Moses is depicted holding the Decalogue (Tablets of the Law), signifying the covenant between God and the Jewish people, while Aaron, adorned in the High Priest’s breastplate (Hoshen), carries a censer (incense burner), symbolizing his sacred priestly duties in the Holy Temple.
Each vignette is crowned by ornate Baroque-style arches, enhancing the sense of grandeur and religious reverence. Surrounding these figures are richly detailed cherubic sunbursts positioned at the extreme corners, symbolizing divine presence. Additionally, a small angelic face emerges above both Moses and Aaron, further reinforcing themes of spiritual guardianship. The finely pierced and chased silverwork creates a sense of depth and texture, demonstrating the remarkable skill of the artisan.
The back clasp bears a maker’s mark, which can be seen in the provided images, adding to its historical authenticity. Despite its age, the buckle remains in excellent condition, with no significant dents, preserving its intricate craftsmanship and religious significance. This remarkable piece is a testament to the artistry and devotion of the Jewish communities of the Dutch Golden Age.
Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a Lifetime Certificate of Authenticity and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.
