About the Item

Italian portable travel altar, c. 1730. Walnut case with cartapesta, scagliola and carved wood, complete with original accessories. This rare and beautifully preserved altar dates to around 1730. The piece is housed in a folding walnut case with its original key and transforms into a complete small altar when opened. The interior features an elaborately modelled cartapesta relief depicting the Descent from the Cross, framed by an angel with a ladder and further angels holding the Instruments of the Passion. The side panels and altar floor are made of finely crafted scagliola, which imitates precious marble in warm tones. At the centre stands a carved wooden crucifix, accompanied by a small gilded pyx for holding hosts and an original liturgical stole — both of which are extremely rare survivals in such sets. The fold-out baldachin completes the sacred ensemble, giving the altar an authentic and harmonious liturgical presence. An applied letter 'G' with traces of gilding suggests the initial of an early owner. The entire ensemble remains in its original, untouched condition, which significantly enhances its historical and collector's value.
