About the Item
A large and atmospheric 18th century carved wooden statue of Saint Margaret, most likely originating from Spain. Executed in chestnut wood, with traces of its original polychrome still visible. The sculpture shows the saint in a devotional pose, hands clasped in prayer while holding a small cross, standing upon the dragon she is said to have overcome.
Saint Margaret of Antioch is one of the early Christian virgin martyrs, traditionally invoked for protection during childbirth and against demonic forces. Her iconography often includes the dragon, symbolizing her triumph of faith over evil.
This piece is an impressive example of Spanish Baroque devotional sculpture, likely created for a monastic or church setting. The expressive carving, the monumental size, and the remnants of polychromy reflect the religious fervor and dramatic aesthetic typical of Spanish sacred art of the period.
