About the Item

Augsburg silver sunburst monstrance, c. 1797–1799. Master: Jakob Hermann David Lüders This impressive late 18th century sunburst monstrance was crafted in Augsburg between 1797 and 1799 and is made of silver that has been partially fire-gilded. It bears the maker's mark of Jakob Hermann David Lüders and the corresponding Augsburg hallmarks. The monstrance is constructed in the traditional tripartite form of base, shaft, and removable upper section. The richly modelled base rests on four volute-shaped supports and is adorned with godroned decoration and finely chased putto heads on each side, showcasing the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of Augsburg silversmithing. The elegantly proportioned shaft displays the emerging Neoclassical taste of the late 18th century, with vertically fluted contours and a balanced silhouette. The two-part nodus features a mounted smoky quartz at the front. The Lamb of God resting on the Book of the Seven Seals appears both above the nodus and on the upper section, a refined symbolic detail. The circular host window is framed by a dramatic sunburst composed of fourteen large rays and twelve smaller ones, culminating in a Rocaille motif at the top – a final echo of Baroque and Rococo styles, which is beautifully contrasted with the shaft's more restrained classical forms. This piece is a striking example of late Augsburg liturgical silver, blending Baroque radiance with Neoclassical clarity.
