This beautifully hand-carved oak bookstand is a remarkable example of late 19th-century Gothic Revival ecclesiastical furniture, originating likely from the Low Countries. The piece features an intricately pierced top panel with flowing scrollwork, a shield-shaped IHS monogram (symbolizing the name of Jesus), and beneath the Christogram, a carved ribbon bears the Latin abbreviation “P.D.N.F.D.”, possibly referencing a liturgical phrase such as Per Dominum Nostrum Filium Dei, adding to the spiritual significance of the piece.
Designed for both functionality and symbolism, the bookrest is adjustable in height and angle, making it perfect for church services, ceremonial readings, or the display of sacred texts.
