About the Item
This exceptional French wall-mounted holy water font was crafted circa 1870 and showcases the luxurious artistry of cloisonné enamel combined with richly veined green onyx and finely cast bronze. The large cross-shaped form is set on a gleaming green marble (onyx) base, overlaid with elaborate cloisonné decoration in a vibrant palette of crimson, turquoise, sky blue, and ivory. At the center, an ornate “IHS” Christogram reinforces the devotional nature of the piece.
Executed using the ancient cloisonné technique, where enamel, glass, or gemstones are inlaid within compartments formed by delicate metal strips, the decoration reflects the intricate craftsmanship and opulent materials favored during the Second Empire period. The holy water font at the base is equally ornate, featuring hinged access, a gilt interior, and multi-colored enamel in floriate and geometric motifs.
The reverse is finished in solid brass and includes a sturdy hanging ring for wall display. Measuring 13.75 inches high by 8 inches wide and 2.25 inches deep, this sacred object remains in excellent condition, with light wear consistent with age. A striking example of 19th-century French ecclesiastical art, ideal for collectors, devotional spaces, or as a refined spiritual accent in any interior.

Antique large cloisonné enamel wall crucifix with font
French, Late 19th Century
Height 57cm, width 33cm, depth 7cm
This superb decorative cross is designed to hang on a wall, enabled by the small clover-shaped gilt metal handle which surmounts the top. The cross is shaped as a traditional Christian budded crucifix, and features stunning cloisonné enamel decoration that is expertly contrasted by an ebonised wood backing.
The cross is centred by a budded panel, that features four blooming flowers wrapped within their vines in a heart-esque pattern. These designs are bordered by a red and gilt geometric surround, which provides an interesting contrast to the more flowing linearity within. Similar flower-and-vine motifs, as well as similar geometric bordering, adorn the rest of the cross’s main body. The colour contrasts within the cloisonné enamel are particularly pleasing, with the pale-yellow ground making the bright hues of the foliate decoration stand out.
At the bottom of the cross sits a font, or stoup, originally designed to hold holy water. The font is also decorated with cloisonné enamel, but employs a geometric layered design in differing shades.
The reverse of the cross is stamped ‘1138’.
Replete with refined decorative elements, this excellent piece of religious décor...
