About the Item

Honor the legacy of a beloved French saint with this expressive antique polychrome wood sculpture of Saint Roch. Carved in France circa 1870 and standing an impressive four feet tall, the figure retains its original painted finish. Saint Roch, born in Montpellier in the 14th century, is venerated as the patron saint of plague victims, pilgrims, and dogs. He is depicted here in classic iconography: dressed in a pilgrim’s cloak, tunic, and boots, with a wide-brimmed hat slung over his back. One hand is raised to reveal the plague wound on his thigh, an emblem of his suffering and miraculous healing. At his feet, his loyal dog gazes up with devotion, traditionally shown bringing him bread during his time of isolation and symbolizing divine care. The large, hand-carved wooden figure is rendered in a soft palette of aged rose, green, and earth tones, with deeply sculpted drapery and a serene, introspective expression. The reverse features finely carved details of his pilgrim’s satchel and hat. In good condition commensurate with age, the statue exhibits visible craquelure, paint wear, and minor losses, all of which enhance its sacred, timeworn presence. A moving example of 19th-century French religious sculpture, this statue would make a meaningful addition to any sacred space, curated collection, or traditionally inspired interior. Weight 77 pounds. 18.5"W x 11"D x 48"H
