About the Item

Bring devotional beauty to a mantel, console, or chapel corner with this graceful antique sculpture of the Virgin Mary, carved in the Pyrenees of France circa 1860. Hand-carved in wood and finished in luminous gold leaf and soft polychrome, the figure presents the Madonna in serene prayer, her hands open in gentle supplication. The carving displays lovely movement throughout the draped robe, with delicate detailing in the folds of the garment, the hair, and the expressive, downcast face. Mary is shown standing on a blue globe and triumphantly crushing a serpent beneath her foot, an iconographic symbol drawn from Genesis 3:15 and echoed in Christian tradition, representing her victory over evil and her role as protector and intercessor. Richly patinated from age, the sculpture retains much of its original gilding and painted surface, with natural wear that enhances its devotional character. A meaningful addition to any collection of religious art. Dimensions: 8" W x 7" D x 22" H.
