About the Item

Russia / 19th Century / Religious Icon / Egg tempera and gilt on wood panel / Antique This finely painted 19th-century Russian icon depicts three Saints Shamona, Guria and Deacon Abibus of Edessa (known in Russian as Samon, Gury and Aviv). Executed in tempera on a wooden panel with a traditional gesso ground, this icon displays a rich color palette — deep reds, greens, and golds — typical of provincial Russian iconography of the late Imperial period. The surface bears a beautiful preserved patina and craquelure consistent with age, enhancing its authenticity and spiritual depth. The Saints on this icon were Christians who were martyred in Edessa, Mesopotamia, under Emperor Licinius for refusal to worship the Pegan Gods. The are venerated in the Orthodox Church as Patron Saints of the Holy Matrimony and their Feast day is celebrated on November 15. The Orthodox icon depicting the Saints are Traditionally gifted as a wedding present. Saint Samon is depicted as a middle-aged man with dark hair and a small beard with a cross in his hands; Aviv as a young, beardless man in a deacon’s stole holding a censer. The icon’s composition is both balanced and intimate, with the saints rendered in a style that blends folk sincerity with classical harmony. The border retains traces of its original red frame, a characteristic feature of 19th-century devotional art. A moving testament to Russian Orthodox faith and craftsmanship, this icon would make a distinguished addition to any collection of religious art or Eastern Christian antiques.
