About the Item

Antique Russian late 19th century silver and niello double sided reliquary cross on period long chain This beautiful antique Russian reliquary cross depicts Christ in a distinctive naive style seen in Russia at the end of the Seventeenth and begining of the Eighteenth centuries during the reign of Peter the Great. The cross opens to reveal a compartment which would have been used to keep a holy relic. The back is hand chased with geometric, foliate and floral niello motifs. Flowing scrolled reticulated elements along the arms of the cross add complexity and balance. A small hand made screw at the back of the cross grants access to the inner chamber. The beautiful hand made long chain completes this wonderful object. The piece is in remarkable condition with original patina throughout. Early crosses which retain their period chain are extremely rare. Length: 2.19 inches Width: 1.38 inches Chain: 21.5 inches Condition: Very Good
