About the Item

Holy water font crucifix Napoleon III, French, 19th century Wood, plated-brass and brass Metal benitier holy water font representing a shell. The crucifix is of painted wood, held in place by intricate brass rods. Notre-Dame du Laus is the name given by Catholics to the Virgin Mary as she appeared to the Dominican tertiary, Benoîte Rencurel, from 1664 to 1718, in the hamlet of Laus in the commune of Saint-Étienne-le-Laus, in the Hautes-Alpes (Eastern South of France) This very long series of apparitions (54 years of apparitions) to a young shepherdess quickly gave rise to local devotion, and pilgrimages were organized to venerate the Virgin under the name of Notre-Dame du Laus, which subsequently gave its name to the locality. Although the Marian apparitions were only recognized very late, in 2008 by Jean-Michel Di Falco, Bishop of Gap, the organization of pilgrimages and the construction of infrastructure to accommodate pilgrims (accommodation and a church), as well as the establishment of religious orders by the local bishop to welcome pilgrims and organize devotions, even during the seer's lifetime, led to the place and the devotion becoming well known, spreading rapidly throughout France and abroad. Thus, the Virgin of Laus is venerated in many churches, and parishes are dedicated to her. Notre-Dame du Laus is the name given by Catholics to the Virgin Mary as she appeared to the Dominican tertiary, Benoîte Rencurel, from 1664 to 1718, in the hamlet of Laus in the commune of Saint-Étienne-le-Laus, in the Hautes-Alpes. The sanctuary of Laus, the main center of devotion to Our Lady of Laus, has seen a steady increase in the number of pilgrims, especially since the apparitions were recognized in 2008, and now welcomes 200,000 pilgrims a year. The Vatican has granted marks of recognition to Our Lady of Laus, first by authorizing the canonical coronation of her statue in 1855, then by granting the title of minor basilica to the church of Laus in 1894.
