About the Item

Unique and highly collectible antique Gothic wall cabinet with working lock and key. This handcrafted and rare Gothic Revival wall cabinet from the late 1800s or early 1900s is another one of our magnificent recent finds. The uniqueness of the design, the quality of the workmanship, the many Gothic details, the patina and its excellent condition makes this another perfect purchase for collectors of this ancient and highly decorative style. Even more so when you have a special interest in collecting reliquary items, because this cabinet was made purely for that purpose. This is pretty clear to see by the small size of the square cabinet itself, but even more so by the hand sawn brass text at the bottom 'RELIQUIAE SANCTORUM' which means Relics of Saints. The former owner / collector told us that this piece originated from a convent in the southeast of the Netherlands, but he could no longer remember the name. If it was made in the Netherlands or in another European country, is something we don't know. What we do know is that this cabinet is laced with Christian and Gothic decorations, such as the descending bird: And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him. The bird coming down from the sky in the door of this cabinet is doing so between a pair of Gothic church like windows (with tilted quatrefoil symbols in the top). The larger, winged angels on either side of the cabinet as well as the cross in the top center too are all handsawn out of thick brass. Finally, the hand sawn PAX sign stands for/is an abbreviation of the Latin salutations "pax vobis" ("peace to you") or "pax vobiscum" ("peace with you"), which are used in the Catholic Mass, the Lutheran Divine Service, and the Western Orthodox Mass. All these stylized decorations together have made this unique reliquary wall cabinet an absolute joy to behold. The blackened wooden wall plaque is made of a light pine wood and the cabinet and shelve are made of blackened oak. The fabric inside the cabinet is a 'velour the Utrecht' (possibly the original one). The striking little door with the strong brass hinges also comes with a perfect working lock and the original key. Through a hole in the front (just above the cross) this unique and meaningful cabinet can easily and safely be mounted to your wall in no time at all. Mind you, our fair price for this one of a kind antique even includes perfect packing (in a custom made box) and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. A Gothic Revival reliquary. Circa late 19th / early 20th century. Made of solid oak with fine carving. Reliquaries have been used to store relics since the Middle Ages. In sacred architecture they are often located behind the main altar in the chancel. In addition to classical, often church-like caskets, anthropomorphic, so-called "speaking" reliquaries were also made, which already inform the viewer about their contents through their own design. Mostly they were made of precious metals and decorated with rich sculptural ornaments or precious stones. One of the most famous examples of reliquaries is the Epiphany shrine of Nicholas of Verdun from the late 12th or early 13th century in Cologne Cathedral. The reliquary offered here has an architectural structure with a rectangular ground plan. The three-sided glazed box with a dormer roof rests on a plinth. A total of 8 columns of Corinthian order form the arcades which are crowned on both long sides by 3 lancets each and enclose the lancet windows...
