Antique Hand Carved Oak Wall Panel Depicting Christ Falling For 3rd Time Station

Stunning and deeply carved work of religious art. This good size and all hand carved, solid oak wall plaque depicts Jesus as He has fallen for the third time. In the way of the cross this is known as the ninth station and you will rarely find a deeper or better carved specimen. Especially the quality of the facial expressions was what drew us to this work of religious art, because not many artists have the skills for that. Apart from one imperfection/chip to the nose of the soldier on the right, the deep carvings could not be in better condition. To find such a quality antique with not a single restauration to the hands or fingers (which always are the most vulnerable) is a minor miracle. If you look at image number 6 then you can better see how deep this biblical scene was carved out of the solid oak panel. It must have taken one very skilled sculptor months rather than weeks to perfectly hand-carve this sizable plaque, because he almost had to carve seven entire statuettes in one go. Some of the details (like the halo) have been highlighted with a hand-painted gilding and the faces and two beards were given a more natural color. This makes this antique gem even more realistic. Looking at this powerful scene, makes us think of the following line 'every human has the task to let himself be born'. We think this means that we are here to try to find ourselves beyond our egos. When you do 'overcome your ego' then you will find a deep peace, but you will still have to deal with the world/society you live in. That world/society is almost entirely dominated by ego-thinking and ego-behaviour. Just like Jesus however, you can then be the light that helps your society move forward. It is in that light that Jesus remains a great teacher, motivator and catalyst in helping us to be the best we can be, even when many (if not most) people won't understand you. Each person ofcourse will have his/her own thoughts and ideas when looking at this impressive plaque.
