About the Item

Antique wooden Zushi (miniature shrine, the "house of the Gods") with water-drop like symbol openwork. Manufactured circa 1860s - 1900s (late Edo to Meiji period) estimate from the style conditions. Made from Sugi cedar, stained with deep, matted black color. It comes not only from the layers of persimmon tannin (kakishibu) burnt pine ink, as well as deepened by smoke from the kitchen hearth fireplace for years. It's thin, but freestanding. This type of Zushi is called "Ofuda Ire", means "talisman holder" - to put Ofuda (talisman) received at Shinto shrine or Buddhist temple, renowned as the smallest alter for home. Water-drop like openwork is on the holder lid, the symbol is Cintamani (wish-fulfilling jewel), originally one of Buddhist symbols. However, In Shinto, it's often associated with Inari - the God of rice, prosperity and success, especially in business.
