About the Item

An extraordinary and highly important 18th-century Torah pointer (Yad) in solid sterling silver, dated 1786. At nearly 250 years old- only ten years short of its quarter-millennium anniversary- this remarkable Judaica object was created in the same decade as the founding of the United States, placing it firmly within one of the most pivotal moments of modern history. Measuring an impressive 47 cm in length, this Yad is exceptionally large, far exceeding the size of most known Torah pointers from the 18th century. Examples of this scale and quality are exceedingly rare, and such monumental proportions strongly suggest an object commissioned for an important congregation or ceremonial setting. The silver surface is richly adorned with finely chased and embossed decoration, including a central Star of David, elegant floral and foliate motifs, and a beautifully sculpted pointing hand at the terminal. A subtle spiral motif running along the shaft adds sculptural movement and visual depth. The upper section is crowned with the Tablets of the Ten Commandments, a powerful and symbolic feature emphasizing the sacred function of the object. The finial is further enhanced with two gemstones, an exceptionally rare and luxurious detail for Torah pointers of this early period, elevating the piece both artistically and ceremonially. Accompanying the Yad is an antique lace-embroidered fabric cover, dating from the same period. The cover shows age-appropriate wear, including some tears at the top, consistent with its age and long ceremonial life. During the late 18th century, Jewish ceremonial silver reached a high point of craftsmanship, reflecting both religious devotion and the growing cultural presence of Jewish communities in Europe. Torah pointers of this size, material, and ornamentation were costly commissions and are now rarely encountered outside museum collections. Material: Sterling Silver Date: 1786 Period: Late 18th Century Length: 47 cm (exceptionally large and rare) Decoration: Ten Commandments tablets, Star of David, floral motifs, spiral shaft Gemstones: Two Accessories: Antique lace-embroidered fabric cover (period; minor tears on the top) Condition: Very good antique condition, with wear consistent with age and ceremonial use. This Yad represents a rare opportunity to acquire a museum-quality Judaica artifact distinguished by its monumental scale, early date, gemstone embellishment, and exceptional craftsmanship. Comparable 18th-century Torah pointers of this size and presence are virtually unobtainable on today’s market. An outstanding acquisition for serious collectors of Judaica, religious silver, or historically significant ceremonial objects.
