About the Item
This is an incredibly finely made and one of a kind silver 875 Hanukkah Menorah. Extremely detailed and intricate, it has an eagle on the top, two Stars of David on the left and right as well as ornaments of flowers on the branches on both sides. It’s a nine branched menorah,- eight of the nine branches hold lights which symbolise the eight nights of the holiday, on each night, one more light is lit than the previous night, until on the final night all eight branches are inflamed. The ninth branch holds a candle, called the shamash ( translated “helper" or "servant"), which is used to light the other eight lights.
This wonderful Menorah was many years in private collection in Vienna, Austria. In the middle of it there is an engraving of personal initials C.M.v.R and Wien (translated from German language -Vienna ). We assumed that the letters C.M.v.R stand for Carl Mayer von Rothschild,-born in 1788 in Germany, Frankfurt am Main, member of a famous prosperous family. After he trained in his father's banking business, during Austrian Army’s Nepals (Italy) occupation in 1821, he was sent to Naples to establish Rothschild’s banking branches where he died in 1855. Presumably this special Menorah was
given as a present to one of Rothschilds family members in Vienna as a memory and honor of one of the first Rothschilds who was granted the title of baron (or Freiherr ) by Kaiser Franz I of Austria in Vienna in 1822.
The Menorah comes with a beautiful marble pedestal.
