Top quality carved and good size Saint Anthony sculpture. This beautiful quality sculpture of Saint Anthony is in very good condition. Saint Anthony is commonly shown holding the Child Jesus, who is often on a bible, with one or more madonna lilies somewhere in the picture. The dual symbolism of both the Christ Child and the lily emphasizes Anthony's purity and trustworthiness. This work of religious art is entirely handcarved out of solid oak and it has a strong yet calm presence. Over the many decades it has also grown a beautiful patina and the serene expression on the faces of both Anthony and the child are an absolute joy to look at. It takes a highly skilled artisan to create such peaceful facial expressions and we will never understand how, at the same time, this European master sculptor managed to get the surface of this oak statue so perfectly smooth. The detailed hands and feet of Anthony and even the intricate carvings of the knotted rope, they all have a perfectly smooth and even surface. But also the perfect, natural posture of these two historical individuals, reveal the work of a master sculptor. The stem of the symbolical lily flowers is missing, one foot of the child Jesus is restored and there are some chips of wood missing on one side of one of Anthony's feet. Other than that this great workmanship church relic is in superb condition (as you can see in our images).
