About the Item

This exceptional early 20th-century Austrian Art Deco Torah pointer (Yad) is a rare and visually compelling example of European Judaica, distinguished by its highly unusual material combination and design. Measuring 29 cm in length, the Torah pointer itself is carved from dark fruitwood, giving it a warm, organic presence that contrasts beautifully with its sculptural spiral form. The spiral design, fluid and dynamic, runs along the body of the Yad and is enhanced by carefully placed gemstones rather than metallic emphasis- an approach that sets this piece apart from traditional silver examples. At the top, the pointer is crowned with a clear crystal accompanied by a small green gemstone, adding vertical elegance and subtle color contrast. Near the lower section, a red gemstone provides visual balance and depth. Most strikingly, instead of the customary sculpted pointing finger found at the end of a Torah pointer, this Yad terminates in a pointed, reddish amber stone- a bold and highly original artistic choice that underscores the Art Deco character of the piece while remaining symbolically functional. The Torah pointer is preserved in the velvet-lined period box, decorated with silver-thread fabric inside. Of exceptional historical importance is the seal of Judenburg mounted on the lid, stamped onto a fragment of an Esther scroll (Megillat Esther)- a rare and evocative survival that firmly anchors the object within its Jewish ceremonial and communal context. The box dimensions are: 33 cm length, 7.5 cm hight and 11 cm depth. Judenburg, in the region of Styria, Austria, was among the earliest and most important medieval Jewish centers in Central Europe, documented from the 13th century onward. The community played a vital role in trade and Jewish religious life until its destruction and expulsion in the late Middle Ages. Judaica objects associated with Judenburg are exceptionally scarce, lending this piece considerable historical resonance. With its dark fruitwood construction, gemstone ornamentation, amber terminal and the connection to Judenburg, this Torah pointer represents a museum-quality example of early 20th-century Austrian Judaica. Its Art Deco aesthetic, unconventional materials, and historical associations make it a rare and highly desirable collector’s piece. A remarkable survival of Jewish ceremonial art, uniting originality of form, symbolic depth, and exceptional craftsmanship.
