A scarce Spanish Colonial Hispano-Philippine hand carved santo altar figure sculpture. circa 1810 Handmade by Spanish settlers / colonists in the Philippines, late 18th / early 19th century, Bishop Saint, likely depicting Saint Isidore of Seville, rich layered polychrome pigments on sculpted wood, bearded figure with finely detailed face and wavy hair wearing mitre, robes, rising on stepped base, lacking arms. A wonderful example of early religious folk art! Provenance/Acquisition: Sticker from the National Museum of the Philippines on back, museum id written above it. Acquired from the highly reputable auction house Austin Auction Gallery, est.1983, Austin, Texas. Western Religious Art catalog Dimensions: (approx) 15.5" Tall, 4.5" Wide, 3" Deep, A superb museum quality example, in very good original antique condition with nicely aged warm rustic heavily worn distressed patina over the whole.
