An exceptional 16th-century Belgian crucifix, originally conceived for use in religious processions, later mounted on a stepped marble and wooden pedestal for display. This remarkable devotional object harmoniously combines wood, metal, and marble, exemplifying the refined craftsmanship and spiritual intensity of early ecclesiastical art.
The cross, clad in gilded metal, features a finely cast figure of Christ rendered with expressive naturalism and quiet reverence. Each terminal of the cross is adorned with decorative spheres, subtly embossed with floral motifs, imparting a sense of sacred ornamentation. The sculptural composition is elevated by its later black marble and white stone base, which enhances its architectural presence and ceremonial elegance.
