About the Item

Choir stalls. Walnut wood. Spanish School, 16th century. Fragment of a choir stall, made of walnut, carved in its color, featuring three seats with their respective folding misericords decorated with geometrically arranged plant carvings. The relief decoration focuses on a series of moldings and figurative motifs found mainly on the arms or sides of the seats. Starting at the top, a wide moulding with a relatively complex layout (reminiscent, for example, of some of the stalls in the Lego Choir at the Cartuja de Granada, or of the “cor adl dormitori de la Canònica” in the Tortosa Cathedral Museum, or of the choir stalls at Huesca Cathedral, the choir stalls at Ávila Cathedral, etc.) gives way to a “C” shape beginning with a volute and ending with a figurative element (a lion’s head and two seated male figures alternating with one kneeling facing the stalls). This, in turn, is contrasted with another curve enhanced by a moulding ending in a furry paw finished in a lion’s claw, on top of another flat moulding. In the space left by the first “C” shape mentioned above, figurative carvings also appear: a total of eight monstrous figures with a certain classicist reminiscence (note, above all, the one that resembles a harpy with goat legs, located on the same front as a winged faun). The stalls of the Choir of the Fathers in the Church of the Cartuja in Granada and those of the Cathedral of Calahorra in La Rioja rest in a lion's claw (much more pronounced than the present one). The "gathering" of the carvings on the sides can be seen in the "cadirat del cor al dormitori de la Canònica" in the Tortosa Cathedral Museum (where the lines are also formed based on moldings, although not in the same way as here, and the misericords have vegetal carvings divided into two parts by a strip that acts as an axis of symmetry). Also noteworthy is the carved, unpainted walnut stalls in the Church of San Esteban de Sos del Rey Católico (Zaragoza), installed in 1556 and made by the Frenchman Medardo de Picardía (also known as Picat Carpentier) and his assistant Domingo de Segura. · Size: 229x57x116 cm WEIGHT is merely orientative, may be higher.
