About the Item
Elevate a chapel, monastery, or private devotional space with this monumental and complete Chemin de Croix (Stations of the Cross) set, handcrafted in France circa 1850. Each of the fourteen large wall-mounted panels, measuring 45 inches in height and weighing approximately 90 pounds, beautifully illustrates one of the sacred episodes from the Passion of Christ.
Sculpted from plaster and stucco in deep relief, every piece is finely hand-painted in rich, expressive tones and framed within an arched surround topped with a wooden cross and numbered cartouche in Roman numerals I through XIV. The figures are rendered with remarkable detail, their gestures and expressions evoking both human sorrow and divine grace. The collection has been fully restored to its original vibrancy, maintaining its aged patina and devotional character.
This rare and complete 19th-century French set embodies the artistry of ecclesiastical sculpture from the period, when such works were commissioned for cathedrals and parish churches across France. With its exquisite craftsmanship and monumental scale, the ensemble offers a powerful visual narrative suitable for liturgical or private reflection.
The Fourteen Stations Depicted Are:
Jesus is condemned to death.
Jesus takes up His cross.
Jesus falls the first time.
Jesus meets His Blessed Mother.
Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross.
Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.
Jesus falls the second time.
The women of Jerusalem weep over Jesus.
Jesus falls the third time.
Jesus is stripped of His garments.
Jesus is nailed to the cross.
Jesus dies on the cross.
Jesus is taken down from the cross.
Jesus is laid in the tomb.
The Stations of the Cross devotion, first practiced by early pilgrims in Jerusalem, was popularized throughout Europe by the Franciscan order during the 18th and 19th centuries. This complete French set stands as both a sacred devotional tool and an extraordinary example of historic religious artistry.
Each panel measures 36" W x 45" H.
