Copper Cross with Christ, Copper, Jet, Textile, Wood, Limoges, France

About the Item

The copper piece is placed in a wooden back display with textile upholstery. The Latin cross presents a circular widening in the union of the crossbars and in it is placed a Crucified Christ with four nails, crowned, open eyes, perizonium or cloth of purity by the knee and schematized anatomy, with curvature in the body. On the cross you can see circular shapes and elements reminiscent of a tree, with which you may want to allude to the Tree of Gesé or simply put a cross with the shape of trunks. Jet stones in the eyes and crown. Christ, originally, decorated with champlevé enamels of colored glass and made in the well-known center of Limoges, in France. Compare this piece with others preserved in prominent institutions: a thirteenth-century processional cross from Limoges (inv 17.190.332) shows decorative details similar to this and a series of differences in both the figure and the cross; note the similarities in figure and cross background with the central area of the processional cross of Limoges of the IU Art Museum of Indiana (United States), with the enameled crucifix of the Diocesan Museum of the Seu de Urgell (Spain), with the Museum of the Altarpiece in Burgos (Spain) and with some of the Victoria and Albert Museum of London of the 13th century. The similarities in the pieces are explained by the abundant production, which followed a series of models and which has also allowed a relatively abundant number of copies to be preserved. Limoges enamels are known as a series of pieces of metal (copper, silver, gold) of religious theme decorated with the technique of champlevé enamel using a series of colors (blue, green, white ...), inherited or inspired by the works of the Monastery of Silos (Spain), and with a great height in all Europe in the XII and XIII centuries. The production had already declined for 1370, when the sacking of Limoges by the English took place. However, towards the end of the 15th century, it was revived, but with the technique of "painted enamel" and clearly Renaissance models. Size: Cross 25.5 x 14 cms. Christ 13 x 14 cms.
