About the Item

Solid Silver Corpus of Christ – Mid-18th Century Height: 13 cm (head to toe) Width: 12 cm (hand to hand) Weight: 150 g A finely cast and chased solid silver corpus depicting Christ crucified, dating to the mid-18th century (circa 1740–1760). The figure is shown with head inclined to the right, eyes closed, and detailed flowing hair and beard. The anatomy is naturalistically modelled, with well-defined musculature and a softly idealised form characteristic of the Rococo period. The perizoma (loincloth) is draped in dynamic folds, knotted to one side, and chased to a crisp finish. Four attachment holes—one in each hand and foot—indicate its original use mounted on a cross, likely for a domestic altar or chapel setting. The silver retains a pleasing period patina with light surface wear consistent with age and devotional use. An excellent example of 18th-century ecclesiastical silverwork from Catholic Europe, likely French, Italian, or Southern German in origin. Condition: Minor surface wear, patination, and small casting irregularities typical of the period; otherwise in very good condition.
