About the Item

A devotional shrine, a Memento Mori, crafted from fruitwood with two juxtaposed panels hinged at the base, and crowned with a metal flame. The back features a hole for the nail used to hang it on the wall during devotional service. The profile of the entire shrine is wavy in a purely Baroque style. The exterior is a uniform brown color. Once opened, the part with the metal element was hung on the wall; the horizontal part featured a hole for the devotee's candle. The interior of the two parts is painted. The vertical part, crowned with a spiral metal flame and central buttons, features a painting of a group of overlapping skulls. Below is a predella with the inscription: "Saint Michael, pray for the forgotten souls," the souls in Purgatory, the Archangel to whom one turned to help souls reach the bliss of Paradise. The horizontal base is red, illuminated by the presence of the light of the Holy Spirit. Italy, 17th century.
