About the Item
This striking brass menorah, crafted in the Netherlands during the late 19th century, exemplifies a blend of artistic craftsmanship and symbolic meaning. Measuring approximately 20 inches in height and 17 inches in width, the menorah features an elaborate design that distinguishes it from more conventional models of the period.
The base is composed of three sculpted dolphin figures, a decorative motif commonly found in Dutch and European metalwork of the time, possibly symbolizing water and movement. These stylized dolphins curve outward, forming sturdy supports that elevate the structure, giving it both stability and an ornamental flair.
One of the menorah’s most distinctive elements is the way its branches extend from the central stem. Unlike traditional menorahs with plain arms, this piece features curved branches adorned with small, thorn-like protrusions, evoking the image of a growing tree or vine. Each branch supports a candleholder at its peak, with an additional raised central branch to accommodate the shamash.
A particularly striking design choice is the use of sculpted hands emerging from the central stem to support the branches. These hands, which appear symmetrically positioned, give the menorah an almost anthropomorphic quality, reinforcing the connection between divine light and human devotion. The hands could also be interpreted as referencing priestly blessings, further emphasizing the religious significance of the piece.
This menorah bears a close resemblance to an example housed in the collection of the Jewish Museum in New York (accession number 2847), reflecting a style associated with Dutch Jewish ceremonial art from the late 19th century. Its intricate craftsmanship and symbolic details make it not only a functional ritual object but also a remarkable piece of Judaica with artistic and historical significance.
