About the Item

Early 19th Century Brazilian Painted Shrine, Minas Gerais A rare and poetic survivor of the Brazilian colonial interior tradition, this early 19th-century painted shrine from Minas Gerais embodies the rustic devotion and vivid artistry of the region’s sacred folk craftsmanship. Standing 95.5 cm high overall and ideal for housing images up to approximately 61 cm in height, the cabinet reveals an exquisite balance between naïve charm and baroque sensibility. The façade, crowned by a boldly sculpted red and black crest, opens to reveal richly polychromed doors, each adorned with stylized urns of flowers in deep ochre, green, and crimson tones. Inside, delicate floral and geometric motifs unfold against a soft blue-grey ground, preserving much of their original tempera pigments. Two interior ledges provide gentle stages for santos or votive offerings, while the hand-hewn pine and time-worn patina speak of centuries of quiet devotion. Such shrines were once found in rural fazendas and chapels across Minas Gerais, serving both as personal altars and symbols of prosperity. This example, with its original surface and harmonious proportions, is particularly elegant — a bridge between vernacular expression and colonial refinement. A superb accent for collectors of Brazilian, Iberian, or Latin American religious art, this piece radiates authenticity and soulful color, equally at ease in a traditional or contemporary setting. Height: 95.5 cm (37.6 in). Fits images up to 61 cm H (24 in).
