About the Item
This pair of exquisitely crafted brass candelabras, originating from 19th-century Poland, embodies the beauty and symbolism of Jewish ceremonial art. Intended for Shabbat candle lighting, they are adorned with Hebrew engravings that read "להדליק נר של שבת" ("To light the Sabbath candle"), emphasizing their religious significance. Their intricate design, featuring delicately cast deer figures, reflects a deep connection to Jewish tradition and artistic craftsmanship.
The depiction of deer is particularly striking, as it carries profound spiritual symbolism. In Jewish thought, the deer represents swiftness, beauty, and a yearning for the divine, reminiscent of the biblical verse, "As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God" (Psalms 42:1). These figures, rendered in an openwork design, create an interplay of light and shadow, lending the candelabras an ethereal quality. The elegant, scrolling framework surrounding the deer contributes to the overall refinement of the pieces, showcasing the skill of Polish Jewish artisans of the time.
The surface of the candelabras is adorned with finely incised patterns, including geometric motifs and stylized elements on the bodies of the deer. The necks of the figures feature a crisscross pattern, while their midsections display a series of triangular or hilly shapes that may reference the rolling landscapes of Poland or the symbolic mountains of Israel. The overall aesthetic is both graceful and deeply rooted in tradition.
The candleholders themselves are designed in a classic 19th-century Polish brass style, with rounded, flared drip trays and a sturdy, turned base that ensures stability while enhancing the grandeur of the design. The craftsmanship of these candelabras reflects the artistic legacy of Jewish metalworkers in Poland, who merged functionality with ornate beauty. Today, they stand as historical artifacts, testaments to a vibrant Jewish artistic heritage that once flourished in Eastern Europe.

18th Century Polish Brass Hanukkah Lamp
Located in New York, NY
The backplate is cast and pierced with a central two-handled vase of flowers, flanked by fully formed birds with their heads turned outward. The side panels fitted with two servant lights, fronted by a row of eight oil fonts. Scholars theorize that these Polish Chanukah Lamps that bear two servant lights (as opposed to the singular servant light normally found on a Chanukah Lamp), served a purpose, having been used on one of the days that Chanukah fell on the Sabbath, as Sabbath Candlesticks.
For another example, see page 296 of the book “Five Centuries of Hanukkah Lamps...
