About the Item
A classic early Bezalel School brass Hanukkah lamp, finely crafted with characteristic repoussé, applied elements, and architectural motifs. The front bench supports eight elongated oval oil cups, neatly affixed in a straight row, each formed with clean, rounded contours. The servant lamp (shamash) is mounted to the side of the bench, fashioned in the same manner and applied securely with a vertical support.
The backplate, rising above the bench, is executed in a distinctive triangular form, its surface richly decorated in the early Bezalel style. Along the lower register of the backplate appears the inscription “Bezalel Jerusalem”, set beneath a row of keyhole-shaped arches impressed in a precise, orderly sequence. Above these arches is the Hebrew phrase “הנרות הללו קודש הם” (“These lights are holy”), crisply impressed and framed by the geometry of the triangular field.
Dominating the upper section of the backplate is a large repoussé sunflower, its petals radiating outward with depth and dimensionality. The sunflower is flanked by three triangular panels, each filled with intricate scrolling motifs and centered by a small raised button-form ornament, lending symmetry and surface interest to the design.
The lamp stands on three bracket feet—two at the front corners and one formed by the extended lower edge of the backplate—providing a stable and well-balanced foundation typical of early Bezalel craftsmanship. A handsome, well-proportioned example combining regional symbolism, early 20th-century Jerusalem design language, and the hallmark repoussé work of the Bezalel workshops.
