Intricate and unusual antique Cuernavaca reticulated sterling silver and ruby glass cross on chain
Late 19th- Early 20th Century
The city of Cuernavaca, the ancient Quauhnahuac, is called the "City of Eternal Spring" due to its designation as tierra templada (temperate region). It is believed to be one of the origins of the Mesoamerican civilization. The city is home to a number of notable early churches dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries, including the Cuernavaca Cathedral, which was a part of the monastery of the Third Order of the Franciscans, called La Asunción in the 16th century. The location, just a 90 minute drive from Mexico City, has attracted royalty, aristocrats and artists for centuries. Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, Princess Maria Beatrice of Savoy, Barbara Hutton, the Shah of Iran, Bauhaus designer Michael van Buren, Robert Brady and David Alfaro Siqueiros were among those who lived there.
This exquisitely made cross pays homage to the beautiful historic city through the use of intricate details, reflecting Cuernavaca's Baroque heritage.
