About the Item

French Art Deco Bronze Oak Crucifix from Sainte-Claire de Mur de Barrez Monastery, France, 1920s. This exquisite French Art Deco bronze and oak crucifix dates back to the 1920s and originates from the historic Sainte-Claire de Mur de Barrez monastery, home to the Poor Clares order in France. The piece is closely related to the artistic style of the renowned Ateliers de Marolles. Measuring 16.5" (42 cm) in height, 7.9" (20 cm) in width, and 6.85" (17.4 cm) in depth, this crucifix is a stunning example of early 20th-century religious art. It bears small traces of age but remains in very good condition. Matching candlesticks are also available for purchase. The Sainte-Claire de Mur de Barrez monastery was originally founded in 1653 by Sieur François d'Humières. It became a spiritual center for the Poor Clares, a Catholic order dedicated to a life of poverty and contemplation. The nuns were deeply involved in the education of young girls in the region. During the French Revolution, the sisters were dispersed, and the monastery was repurposed as a communal house, barracks, prison, and later a school. In 1868, the monastery was re-established by Poor Clare nuns from Aurillac, making it one of the few monasteries restored post-Revolution in its original 17th-century buildings. Nestled in a medieval village of just 800 inhabitants at an elevation of 800 meters, the monastery overlooks the scenic Aubrac and Cantal mountains — a perfect setting for reflection and awe-inspiring natural beauty. This rare French Art Deco crucifix from the Sainte-Claire de Mur de Barrez monastery is ideal for collectors of religious art, antique crucifixes, and Art Deco ecclesiastical décor.
