About the Item

This is an incredibly unique pair of incense torches from Italy that have been fitted with custom metal bases so they may be positioned independently and upright to appreciate every aspect of their forms. Made of repoussé metal and wood handles that would have been painted originally, now well-patinated with time and use; the distressed textures confirm their authenticity and character. The decorated housing also includes floral/foliate applications and features a pierced design around the dome. Although delicate, both torches remain functional enough to open their doors revealing where incense was secured during use in a church or procession. C. 1800 or much earlier. The torches differ slightly in height, one is 60 ¾”H, the other approximately 58 ¾”H where it has lost its finial. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition. Sold as a pair.

The torches are essentially two distinct halves: reeded brass columns of the upper body attach to the wooden post...
