About the Item
Early religious work of art, presented in the original antique frame.
This beautiful and uplifting portrait of Saint Joseph holding hands with the child Jesus is an oil on canvas and we date it to the 18th century and it is from the Baroque Revival era here in Europe. What makes this painting extra special, to us, is the unique father and son relationship that they had and we love the carefree manner in which the artist has perfectly captured a moment in their lives. We also like the prominent place that the white lilies take in this antique and endearing painting. Those lilies symbolize integrity and indicate that Saint Joseph was the earthly spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose purity is represented by the chaste white lily. Here Joseph and Christ come with perfect Baroque Revival faces, hairdo and clothing and have you also noticed the halo behind Joseph's head and the radiant light (of Christ) behind the head of this child Jesus? This painting obviously is in used (or rather aged) condition, but there is something so loving and serene about this unique work of religious art that its condition can hardly be an issue. By the way, the deeper meaning of this amazing work of art makes it special, but the workmanship of the artist takes it to the next level and we are certain that too is something that the next custodian will realize.
If you like this early and good quality workmanship and meaningful painting as much as we do then you will love our price. Especially, since perfect packing and worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days are complimentary.

Large Antique Italian School Oil on Canvas Painting Apparition of Mary to James
Located in Lisse, NL
Large size antique Gothic Art painting 'The Apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint James'.
We are by no means connoisseurs when it comes to antique paintings, but we have seen enough antique paintings to know when something is special, decorative and truly inspiring and interesting to look at. And the large size of this antique work of art, makes it impressive too. Also, because it must have taken one very skilled painter an awful lot of time (probably weeks, if not months) to hand-paint this famous religious scene. According to ancient local tradition, on January 2nd of the year AD 40, the Virgin Mary appeared to James on the bank of the Ebro River at Caesaraugusta, while he was preaching the Gospel in Iberia. Looking at the perfectly painted ancient landscape
and the kneeling figure who is in awe of what he is witnessing (by the river bank) we believe this is in fact the apparition of Mary to James. Following that apparition, by the way, St. James returned to Judea, where he was beheaded by King Herod Agrippa the first (in the year AD 44). Judging from the skillfully painted individuals in the Renaissance Style and the striking and lively colors, we believe, this late 1800s painting is the work of a true artisan. This work of religious art on the back reads 'Sacerdote Salvatore Rosa, Dipinse 1889' which means Priest Salvatore Rosa, Painted 1889. This priest clearly had a god given talent and god bless him for having created this masterpiece.
Apart from some minor imperfections this large and nostalgic painting is in very good condition and we believe it will look particularly great in a church, monastery or chapel. At the same time, a one of a kind antique like this will ofcourse also look great atop the stairwell of a mansion or in the entry hall of a French castle etc. We don't know the 'exact' value of this large size antique painting...

Antique Wall Display Cabinet with a Rare Mary
Child Jesus Sculpture Fragment
Located in Lisse, NL
One of a kind, handcrafted display cabinet with a rare religious artefact.
This excellent wall display cabinet still opens and closes perfectly and it comes with the original antique glass in the door. Finding antiques with the original glass with that beautiful ripple in it, always makes those pieces extra desirable (in our view). The striking acorn and leaf motifs in the handcrafted, molded borders of the door too are very stylish features to enjoy. Over the decades the gilding has slightly warn off, which has created a marvelous patina. Given the style, age and perfect fit, we think that this antique wall cabinet was specifically made for the rare religious fragment that it is holding. If you like this unique display cabinet then you will love the rare fragment it is holding. From the missing pieces on the sides you can see that this Virgin Mary and child Jesus plaque...

19th century finest bronze group statue.
This excellent quality and very refined sculpture of Christ with children is another one of our recent great finds. Anyone who knows what it takes to create a bronze sculpture from start to finish realizes how special these works of art really are. For us to have found this rare, antique specimen more than made our day. Firstly, because we love the subject matter and secondly, because antique bronzes always are the best when it comes to the details and the patina. Both the serenity in Jesus' face and the way His cloth is perfectly draped around His sitting body are details that never fail to impress. The angelic faces of the two children who are clearly enjoying to be in His presence, make this meaningful and striking sculpture even more pleasant to look at. This handcrafted and antique work of beauty simply warms your heart and it will look marvelous, no matter where you decide to have it on display.

St Joseph and Child Jesus with Lily, Antique German Chromolithograph c.1900
Located in Langweer, NL
St Joseph and Child Jesus with Lily, Antique German Chromolithograph c.1900
This beautifully composed late 19th–early 20th century German chromolithograph presents a tender devotional scene of Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus, one of the most beloved themes in Catholic sacred imagery. Saint Joseph is seated in a humble workshop interior, gently resting his hand on his chest while the Christ Child offers him a white lily, the universal symbol of purity, obedience, and divine election. Both figures are encircled by radiant halos, reinforcing the sacred intimacy of this quiet, fatherly moment.
The composition is rich in symbolic detail: the carpenter’s tools behind Joseph reference his earthly labor and humility, while the soft pastoral landscape visible through the opening suggests God’s providence beyond the domestic sphere. The infant Christ, rendered with luminous skin tones and expressive gaze, embodies both innocence and divine authority. The lily rises vertically between them as a visual axis of spiritual virtue, creating a powerful yet gentle devotional message.
This print was produced using true chromolithography in Germany around 1900, a technique requiring multiple lithographic stones—one for each color layer. The softness of the tonal transitions, the saturated yet harmonious palette, and the velvety matte surface all confirm authentic period production. The lower margin bears the multilingual title “Hl. Joseph / St. Joseph / S. Giuseppe / S. José / Swięty Józef,” as well as the ecclesiastical approval line “Imprimi permittitur. Ordinariatus episcopalis Limburgensis,” confirming official Church authorization for devotional distribution. The imprint “Printed in Germany” further supports its origin within the great German religious printing houses of the era.
This type of high-quality devotional chromolithograph was originally intended for Catholic homes, chapels, schools, and religious institutions. Surviving examples in strong condition are now increasingly sought after by collectors of sacred art, Christian iconography, and historical devotional imagery.
Condition report
Very good condition. Strong, unfaded colors with excellent contrast. Light natural toning to the margins. Minor handling marks consistent with age. No tears, creases, restorations, or losses observed. The printed text and imprimatur remain crisp and fully legible.
Framing tips
This print presents beautifully in a warm gilt or dark walnut frame with a soft ivory mat to enhance the golden halos and the warm burgundy and olive tones of Joseph’s garments. For a more contemporary devotional presentation, a matte black frame with wide museum-style matting works equally well.
