About the Item

Height: 75 cm Width: 31.5 cm Weight: 18.1 kg Material: Cast bronze (chūdō) Signed, with authenticity guaranteed A magnificent large-scale bronze sculpture of Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva (Jūichimen Kannon Bosatsu), created by the celebrated Buddhist sculptor Matsuhisa Shūrin (松久宗琳, 1926–1992) — son of Matsuhisa Hōrin and apprentice to the famed wood sculptor Satō Gen’gan. In 1979, he was honored with the prestigious title of Daibutsushi (Master of Great Buddha Sculpture), a recognition given to the highest-ranking Buddhist sculptors in Japan. This powerful work, with its serene expression and graceful stance, embodies both spiritual reverence and refined craftsmanship. The surface bears a natural rokushō patina (verdigris) developed over time, adding depth and authenticity. Minor marks and irregularities are consistent with age and creation, enhancing its character. A museum-quality bronze — both an object of devotion and a remarkable statement piece for collectors of Japanese Buddhist art.

Baby Buddha- represents the Buddha right after his birth pointing toward Heaven and Earth so they can witness his first steps. Twenty years ago I had a near identical Japanese Baby Buddha. This one has a finer patina and may be more finely cast, but is extremely similar in almost every way. It was made in the same workshop, probably by the same hand. Fortunately, the other one had an inscription on it (this one does not, but is almost certainly the same age as the other one plus or minus 30 years). The woman I mentored at the time was able to read Japanese- she translated the year to late 15th century Japan...
