About the Item

This stunning and unusually large Japanese Buddhist bronze temple bell dates to the 18th century and is richly decorated with two finely cast dragons in high relief. The bell bears an inscription identifying the temple name Banshū Rishōji Kannon-dō, adding important historical and devotional context to the piece. Temple bells such as this were integral to Buddhist ritual life, used to mark time, call monks to prayer, and accompany ceremonial observances. The dragon (ryū), a symbol of protection, wisdom, and spiritual power, is an especially fitting motif in temple architecture and furnishings. The bell remains in very good overall condition, with natural patination and minor surface abrasions consistent with age and use. Its form is well preserved, retaining strong definition in the relief decoration and inscription. Dimensions: 33 × 30 × 9 cm (13 × 11.8 × 3.5 in) Weight: 5 kg (11 lb) Condition: Very good antique condition with minor abrasions and age-appropriate patination.
