About the Item

Late Gothic wooden sculpture depicting the Descent from the Cross, showing the lifeless body of Christ supported by Joseph of Arimathea. Carved in oak and dating to the 16th century. Probably produced in Northwestern Europe, with stylistic features consistent with the Rhineland or the Southern Netherlands. The composition is restrained and focused, with an intimate interaction between the two figures. Christ’s inclined head and relaxed body contrast with the steady, supportive stance of Joseph of Arimathea. The carving is characterised by an understated, sober expression and clearly defined drapery. The flat back indicates that the sculpture was intended for placement in a niche, small altar, or retable. Condition: in good condition. Dimensions: Height 38.5 cm. Width 17.5 cm. Depth 10 cm.
