About the Item
Handmade silver Torah finials, chased, pierced, engraved, and cast, France, circa 1860.
The finials are constructed with large open-work decorated ball in the middle, above it a pole with engraving of bricks and roof tiles, leaf-decorated supporters are holding a small decorated ball topped with a finial.
This Pair of Torah finials (Rimmonim) have been made in France, but they were used in Jewish community in Algeria. Its form is derived from Italian prototypes.
With the integration of Alguria into the French state, from 1836 on the Jews of Algeria thrived and prospered. These Torah finial are indicative of the strong ties with metropolitan France, strengthened by the migration of many Algerian Jews to southern France and Paris, where they established numerous congregations of their own.
