Polychrome wooden sculpture possibly Saint Fiacre. Century XVI. Polychrome wood carving of a bearded saint standing on a simple pedestal. They are shown staring straight ahead, holding one hand to their chest and carrying a basket in this, the left, arm. In his right hand he holds a stick (or perhaps a shovel, since the lower end of the implement is missing). The habits you wear are reminiscent of those worn by San Antonio Abad in some of the works in which this monk, founder of the eremitical movement, is shown. Saint Fiacre, a monk of Irish origin also called Saint Fiacre, lived as a hermit, healing with herbs and already being considered a saint in his country of origin. Seeking greater retirement, he went to France, where he took care of an oratory, a hospice, and a cell in which he himself lived in solitude, mortifying himself, fasting, and working in the garden. In addition to patron saint of gardeners, he is invoked for the cure of venereal diseases and the so-called "figs of San Fiacro". His cult is rooted in Ireland and France, but also in Belgium, Spain and the United Kingdom, for example. He is depicted with a shovel and a book or basket. Physically, sometimes he appears as a young man, and other times older, with a beard, slightly reminiscent of Saint Anthony the Abbot, as is the case here. The lack of carving on the back of this sculpture shows that it would have been created to be placed on an altar. Likewise, it is necessary to highlight the expressiveness of the figure, centered on the face with prominent eyes, and a slight movement in the folds of the habit. Compare, for example, the alabaster figure of the saint in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, made in England or France in the mid-15th century; or the alabaster one from the Victoria Albert Museum in London from the 15th century and of English origiN; or that of the French Church of Saint-Prix. · Size: 32 x 18 x 77 cms weight is merely orientative, may be lower. Dream of a saint. Carved and polychrome wood. Flemish school, 16th century. Relief made of carved and polychrome wood that shows an old man with a particular headdress (reminiscent of some chaperones) lying on a bed and accompanied by two friars dressed in habits, who talk to each other. Iconographically, the figure of the old man lying on the bed (note the cushion that raises the upper part of the body, following the common use of the time) who has not died (probably) because he was not completely lying down, is reminiscent of how he was usually represented, for example, to San Antón, San Jerónimo, etc. It is not very likely that it is the subject of the Transit or Death of Saint Francis of Assisi due to the absence of the Stigmata and due to age. It would be part of a cycle of scenes in the altarpiece of a church, an accompaniment that would give the viewer more clues about the identity of those represented.
