Bronze (1182-1228) Saint Francois d' Assise by Lucienne Heuvelmans. Stamped with the foundry mark on the back " Cire Perdue Bisceglia ". Working primarily in bronze to produce mostly religious figurative sculptures. Rare bronze holy man sculpture by L.Heuvelmans, "Francis of Assisi" Known are the mother and child sculptures from this artist, but finding this rare bronze of Saint Francis was like finding the preverbial needle in a haystack. This famous holyman with the same name as our current pope is a rare and wonderful work of art and a true collector's item. It has a beautiful patina and it will make a great eyecather and 'talking piece' wherever you place it. We could do with some more Francis-like people in the world. *Francis of Assisi (born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone; Italian: Francesco d'Assisi; Latin: Franciscus Assisiensis; 1181 or 1182 – 3 October 1226), venerated as Saint Francis of Assisi, also known in his ministry as Francesco, was an Italian Catholic friar, deacon, mystic, and preacher. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of Saint Clare, the Third Order of Saint Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in Christianity. Lucienne Antoinette-Adelaide Heuvelmans (1885-1944) Paris, French, 20th century. Lucienne Antoinette Heuvelmans was born in 1885 in Paris, France. She studied under Laurent-Honoré Marqueste, Emmanuel Hannaux, and Denys Puech. Working primarily in bronze to produce mostly religious figurative sculptures, she often exhibited her work at the Salons of the Société des Artistes Français. She was awarded Honorable Mention in 1907. In 1911, she was the first woman to receive the Prix de Rome, a prize women were allowed to compete for starting in 1903. She was also awarded a Bronze Medal in 1921. Heuvelmans executed various official commissions from the City of Paris and illustrated a few books. In 1926, she was elected Full Member, and received the Légion d’Honneur. Heuvelmans’ work was sold at auction in Paris in 1983 and 1989 and continues to sell in auctions today (latest: March 19, 2007). Heuvelmans is listed in the Benezit dictionary of artists.
