About the Item

This rare Buddhist ritual ghanta handbell dates to the Muromachi–Momoyama period (15th–16th century) and represents an important ritual implement of Esoteric Buddhism (Vajrayāna). Such bells were used in conjunction with a vajra, forming one of the most significant ritual pairings in mystical Buddhist practice. The bell is cast in naturally patinated bronze and surmounted by a finely formed five-pronged vajra handle (go-kosho). Symbolizing both the diamond and the thunderbolt, the vajra embodies the indestructible strength and clarity of the Buddhist Dharma, while the ghanta represents wisdom. Together, they signify the union of method and insight within ritual practice. The surface displays a deep, aged patina with minor abrasions consistent with centuries of use. A small, old repair is visible at the junction where the bell meets the handle. The bell remains structurally sound and produces a clear, resonant tone.
