Rare Large Scale 17th Century Oak Sacristy Cabinet from France

About the Item

From the 1600s, this rare, large scale, light oak, hand-carved sacristy cabinet once held sacred objects of a catholic church in France. The Parisian family who owned it most recently, have supplied black and white photos showing the piece in a Paris apartment in the 1800s. It is incredibly well carved with an abundance of detail, and overall, it is in very good condition. The beautiful overall shape of the front is bombe (outward curving). Two beautifully carved acanthus leaf S-Scrolls are at the upper corners while acanthus leaf C and S Scrolls are repeated at the corners of the bottom. The acanthus leaf, in short, represents immortality and is seen in abundance throughout this magnificent cabinet. The upper middle section of the cabinet has large C scrolls which support cherub’ heads at the corners. Their foliate wings are draped over and in front of the scrolls. Between the cherubs, the acanthus decorations meet in the middle to show a fantastic central crown. Beneath this is a curved door, carved with detailed floral, foliate and shell motifs. The door opens to an antique fabric lined space, where most of the sacred objects were stored. There is a lock and key on the door. Beneath this is a small drawer with a stylized shell and scrolling acanthus leaves with flowers. An iron handle in the form of a drop is at the centre. The bottom set of acanthus leaf motifs are S-Scrolls at the corners. Its frontage has a cherub’s head with wings beneath. A festoon of grape leaves and dozens of grapes is attached over the cherub’s head with a keyhole at the top. It drapes down and up connecting with the scrolls on either side. When there is space beneath the cabinet (not flat on a table top), the large bottom drawer pulls out and down revealing another opening. The back is unfinished. This is a rare work of art and a beautiful example of fine French wood carving and cabinet making in the 17th century.

A scarce French Provincial Louis XV (1715-1774) / Louis XVI (1774-1792) Period mixed wood religious oratory (prie-dieu / altar) Hand-crafted in France in the 18th century, with later 19th century elements, likely originating in the south of France / Mediterranean region, featuring pegged solid wooden construction of warm, rich fruitwood, chesnut, oak, and maple. Having a slant-front bureau with tall raised back decorated with three Renaissance Revival style high relief panels, the center depicting religious scene comprising Jesus and winged Saint, the side panels with foliate floral fruit pendant carvings, flanked by classical turned baluster-form columns, surmounted with highly stylized hand carved and turned finials. Rare 17th Century Oak and Brass 4-Door Buffet from Saint-Malo, France, C. 1690

This grand and distinctive piece of furniture from Northern Brittany is known as a “buffet malouin” and was created in the late 17th century. These types of cabinets were created for important homes in the historic port city of Saint-Malo. The design, with large octagonal molded panels, double colonettes, and finely cut brass fittings, is unique to other French furniture of the period. The design was directly influenced by the Dutch mariner carpenters living in Saint-Malo at the time (the Dutch beeldenkast cabinet shows similarities) The large four-door cabinet was carved in oak, as was most of the other “malouin” furniture pieces. It is an imposing and impressive piece, standing over 7 feet tall and nearly 7 feet wide. The front of the piece has twisted, double colonettes, multi-profiled cushion-shaped octagonal panels, and finely cut brass key hole escutcheons, drawer pulls, and lozenge plates. There are 3 drawers, 2 of which are full sized, with a smaller drawer in the center. 3 large bun feet along the front hold up the entire piece, while 2 block feet support the rear. Each door has its own functioning key and lock, with a yet another key for the center drawer. Door and drawer panels are solid and impressive old pieces of oak, which still open and close with ease, indicating the quality of construction and great care that this piece has received over the centuries. The “meuble malouin” in the form of a large 4 door buffet is not often easily found. Research shows photos of several models in various states that have come to surface, but they were not nearly pervasive as French case...
