About the Item
This rare and striking Modernist iron Hanukkah lamp, crafted in Germany circa 1930, is a powerful reflection of early 20th-century Jewish design sensibilities—fusing tradition with the sleek, industrial aesthetics of the Bauhaus and modernist movements that defined the interwar period.
Entirely formed from hand-worked iron, the lamp exhibits an austere geometric elegance, its structure cleverly conceived from a single sheet and bar of iron, bent, cut, and joined with artistic ingenuity. The lamp stands sturdily on three curved feet—two at either end, and a prominent central support, all curled slightly at their ends to echo the wrought-iron scrollwork of traditional metal craft, while maintaining the clean lines of modernist design.
The central foot also serves a dual purpose, supporting the Shamash (servant light), which is mounted slightly forward and lower than the main row. Like the other sockets, it is formed from a cone-shaped cup with a central spike inside, allowing candles to be securely fixed upright, ensuring balance and stability. This practical yet elegant engineering is replicated across the eight additional candleholders, which are aligned with mechanical precision across a semi-circular cylindrical bar that seamlessly transitions from the base to the backplate—a single unbroken form that is both sculpture and structure.
The flat, rectangular backplate rises cleanly behind the row of lights, its surface unadorned save for the crowning feature: a boldly cut-out Magen David (Star of David) set within a circular roundel. This symbol, formed by precisely intersecting triangles, is pierced through the iron sheet itself, casting shadowed geometry when lit and emphasizing the eternal symbolism of Jewish identity.
The minimalist construction and deliberate rawness of the piece evoke the modernist ideals of function and form, while its handcrafted details and symbolic elements root it firmly in the world of devotional Judaica. Created in a Germany already on the cusp of great upheaval, this menorah stands as a rare survivor—a testament to Jewish resilience, modern artistry, and the enduring flame of cultural expression.
