19th Century Russian Icon with Oklad — Mother of God “Joy of All the Afflicted”
A beautiful 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Mother of God “Joy of All the Afflicted” (Всех скорбящих Радость). The finely detailed silver (or silver-plated) oklad, or revetment, frames the sacred image with repoussé and engraved ornamentation characteristic of the period. The oklad is meticulously crafted, highlighting the Virgin’s serene expression and the intricate folds of her robes, surrounded by smaller figures of supplicants and angels.
The icon rests on its original wooden panel, with a traditional linen backing. The painting beneath appears to retain traces of its original pigments beneath the protective cover.
Discovered at an estate sale in Vienna, Austria, this devotional piece reflects both the deep spiritual traditions of Imperial Russia and the refined craftsmanship of 19th-century iconography.
