"Sculpted And Gilded Statue Of Saint Augustine, 18th Century" Southern Germany or Austria, circa 1700–1750 Carved oak, original water gilding and polychromy traces Height: 36.5 cm A finely carved devotional statue representing Saint Augustine of Hippo, shown as a bishop holding a book and crozier, wearing a mitre and richly layered vestments. Executed in oak with remains of the original red bole water gilding and polychrome decoration, the statue exemplifies the expressive yet modest style of Folk Baroque religious sculpture typical of southern German and Austrian workshops in the early 18th century. The figure's deeply carved robe folds, simplified anatomical forms, and expressive, contemplative facial features reflect the devotional intent of the period. The reverse side is painted rather than gilded, confirming its use in a frontal niche or chapel setting. The crozier is partially lost, with a historical repair at the hand, consistent with the statue’s age and devotional wear.
