About the Item

A complete set of exquisitely hand carved oakwood 19th century plaques "Stations of the Cross". This set came from the Maricolen Cloister church in Antwerp Belgium directly from the Cloister walls. The plaques were commissioned by the Catholic church in the 1860s to adorn the walls of the Cloister Church upon its completion in the late 1860s. Each plaque has a description of the passion in Flemish. We purchased the Antwerp Belgium Maricolen Cloister 6 years ago complete with the contents. Written documentation will be provided stating providence, along with photographs showing the plaques hanging on the walls of the Church. The plaques remain in good condition because they have only this year been removed from the walls. The Stations of the Cross or the Way of the Cross, also known as the Way of Sorrows or the Via Crucis, refers to a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion. The object of the stations is to help the Christian faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage through contemplation of the Passion of Christ. It has become one of the most popular devotions and the stations can be found in many Western Christian churches, including Anglican,[1] Lutheran,[2] Methodist,[3] and Roman Catholic ones. Commonly, a series of 14 images will be arranged in numbered order around a chapel or church so a person can walk from image to image, in order, stopping at each station to say the selected prayers and reflections. This will be done individually or in a procession most commonly during Lent, especially on Good Friday, in a spirit of reparation for the sufferings and insults that Jesus endured during his passion.
