Spanish 16th Century Renaissance Ecclesiastical Wood Carved Tabernacle, The Pelican in her Piety. Magnificent polychrome and gilded wooden Tabernacle with a masterfully hand carved door depicting, “The Pelican in her Piety”. This rare survivor from the 16th century, the Golden Age of Art in Spain, is an important example of the ecclesiastical doctrine. The Tabernacle is constructed from pine wood, dove tailed and polychrome painted with gilt details. It has the original forged iron hinges and lock plate. The carved, “Pelican in her Piety” symbolizes paternal love and self-sacrifice. The pelican plucks its own breast to feed its young with its blood, representing Christ’s sacrifice for humanity. Antique original, untouched, good condition. Heavy chipping and wear throughout due to age and use. Provenance: From the collection of Mark Walberg, a distinguished dealer and Collector with international reputation which spans more than half a century. The tabernacle was kept in the historic Sunbury, Pennsylvania, Wolferton Mansion, belonging to the state’s first senator, William Maclay. Measurements: H 17 ½” x W 12” x D 11”

This rare 17th century panel, carved in high relief, is museum quality and without doubt the work of an important Flemish master carver. It represents the biblical scene of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem for the census. Multiple figures surround the center in a well balanced setting. Rich, deep color and great patina, which developed over about 400 years, make this piece of art exceptional. The panel is mounted on a later dusty rose velvet backing. Condition: Small part of backdrop on right is missing. Joseph’s left hand is missing. Rare Huanghuali Tabletop Cabinet Qing Dynasty 17th/18th C., Provenance. Well balanced and solid structured tabletop cabinet made from huanghuali, (Chinese Rosewood). It dates to the 17th/18th century Qing dynasty. The chest is composed of two framed doors, which when open, reveal two inner shelves. The lower shelf suspends a pair of drawers. The door panels and the chest are raised over aprons elaborately carved with classical Chinese foliate tendrils. The cabinet is fitted with baitong hardware.
