About the Item

Wooden Corpus Christi with honey-brown patina, Flanders, mid-18th C A finely carved wooden figure of Christ on the Cross, depicted with his head inclined gently to the right and eyes downcast in serene resignation. The elongated and subtly twisting body reveals a refined anatomical modeling characteristic of Flemish Rococo sculpture. The perizoma is rendered with dynamic, asymmetric folds, tied in a complex knot at the right hip, enhancing the sense of movement and grace. The figure, now detached from its cross and missing the arms, retains remarkable integrity and surface quality. The stylistic traits—elongated proportions, fluid drapery, and restrained pathos—correspond closely to the idiom of Walter Pompe, one of the foremost sculptors active in Antwerp in the mid-18th century. Pompe’s work, such as his altarpieces and saintly figures in Antwerp and Mechelen churches, demonstrates similar anatomical refinement and elegant composure. While unsigned, this sculpture’s conception and execution suggest either Pompe’s direct hand or that of a sculptor closely associated with his workshop.
