About the Item

An iconic piece of Japanese military-grade optics, this pair of Nikon 20×120 binocular telescopes represents one of the most highly regarded large-format observation instruments of the 20th century. Built by Nippon Kogaku (the company that would become Nikon), these Mark II binoculars were designed for long-distance surveillance from naval ships, coastal stations and strategic lookout points. This example, manufactured in the late 1960s to early 1970s (serial no. 4120299), has been expertly refurbished and polished to a high reflective finish, enhancing the sculptural beauty of its industrial engineering. It is mounted on a robust hardwood field tripod, offering stability, presence and fully adjustable height for both practical use and display. Equipped with 120 mm objective lenses and 20× magnification, the optics deliver bright, high-contrast viewing with superb depth of field. Focus is achieved via individual diopter adjustment at each eyepiece, while interpupillary spacing is controlled through a mechanically linked system. The lenses and prisms are clean and clear, producing the crisp image quality Nikon became world-famous for. Custom brass sunshades and mounting yolk complement the restored bodywork, resulting in a commanding centrepiece suitable for interiors, collectors, superyacht decks, or architectural vantage points. These binoculars were sourced directly from a private Japanese collection before undergoing restoration.
