About the Item
Munsell Color Sphere by the father of color--Albert Munsell. We believe it dates from the early 1900s. Very few examples exist. The Albert H. Munsell color wheel apparatus was designed to demonstrate his pioneering system for organizing color by hue, value, and chroma. The piece features a hand-painted spherical color model divided into calibrated bands of muted reds, yellows, browns, and neutrals, reflecting Munsell’s scientific approach to color perception rather than a purely decorative palette. The sphere is mounted on a metal armature above a blackened wooden base, connected by a belt-driven mechanism to a circular control disk. Turning the disk rotates the sphere, allowing systematic study of color relationships and transitions.
Albert Munsell was an American painter, teacher of art, and inventor of the Munsell color system. He developed a 3-D model for organizing and describing color. Because he developed it on the basis of perception, not physics or chemistry, Munsell’s Color System became an effective system for organizing color ever invented. His work with and theories of color have been utilized by some of the most recognizable companies– like NASA, Apple, and Hershey’s, to name a few– and led to inventions like the Munsell Crayola crayons, the Munsell Color wheel.
