Antique Articulated Human Skull, Medical Teaching Specimen, 1920

About the Item

A very handsome antique articulated human skull that served as a medical teaching specimen beginning in about 1920. Full of character, it features a cut calvarium secured to the mandible via pins and long springs, allowing for articulation of the jaw and repositioning of the cap. Beautiful naturally acquired patina is ivory-like, with finer details such as the coronal suture being darker and crisply defined. Orbits in very nice shape, as are lacrimal and zygomatic bones. Nasal spine intact and sharp, with only a bit of wear to bottom edge of nasal bone. View from below is equally fine, with areas such as the upper palette, sinuses, and foramen magnum retaining a high level of detail. Cranial cavity is clean and very well preserved. Aside from some sheared-off remnants, dentition is gone, with most losses appearing to be post-mortem. Mandible has an especially prominent, irregular, and roughly textured calcification along the alveolar process, with what looks like evidence of ante-mortem bone loss. The number “24” is etched and inked into the cap, frontal bone, and mandible. As expected with a teaching specimen, skull shows some evidence of having been handled, with mostly minor repairs and a few discreet structural reinforcements having been applied over the years. The presence of tiny drill holes in a few spots suggests an evolution in how the three main components were attached. Additional photos provided upon request.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages. In handsome antique condition. Mostly tiny or small glue/epoxy repairs and wire reinforcements (both older and newer) and a couple nicks. Most notably: .63" hole on top; 1" chip on forehead; small chip in cap back; repair to right side of mandible.
